CLOVER -- A former Clover High School athlete died early Sunday morning in a single-car crash outside of York, authorities said.
Robert Michael Dessaint, 18, of 404 Faulkner St. in Clover died from head injuries suffered during the crash, said Deputy York County Coroner Ev Amick.
Dessaint, a former wrestler and soccer player at Clover High, was traveling north on Beersheba Road four miles west of York around 2 a.m. when his 2003 Mitsubishi convertible crossed the center line and swerved off the left side of the road, said Sgt. Jeff Gaskins of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The car struck a tree, and Dessaint was ejected from the vehicle, Gaskins said. He was alone in the car.
Gaskins said Dessaint was not wearing a seat belt, and speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. He said alcohol tests are pending. Other details of the wreck are still under investigation.
Dessaint is survived by a daughter, Kylie, and parents Ron Dessaint of Clover and Joelle Dickerson of Iowa Park, Texas, according to his obituary.
The M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover is handling final arrangements.
