Lander University names top students
Four area students have earned spots on Lander University's President's List or Dean's List for the 2008 fall semester.
Jordan L. Bennett of Clover and Hannah C. Glenn of York maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA to earn a spot on the President's List. Sarah E. Love and Kristen L. Mabry, both of Clover, posted GPAs between 3.5 and 3.9 to secure spots on the Dean's List.
Buy bracelet to help local family
Several locations, including schools in the Clover School District, Bank of York in Lake Wylie and the Peach Tree in Filbert, are selling pink bracelets for $5 each to benefit 1-year-old Mackenzie DeCuir as she undergoes treatment for stage four neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system.
DeCuir is the daughter of Mike and Julie, a teacher at Griggs Road Elementary School, of York.

CHS HOSA students head to Nashville
CLOVER -- The Clover High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) attended the State Leadership Conference last week in Charleston. Ten CHS students competed in four different events. Adam Schronce placed third overall in the Pharmacology event, and Chris Watts took third place in the Sports Medicine event. Both now advance to the National HOSA competition in Nashville, Tenn., later this summer.
Jessica Church was also recognized as a finalist for placing in the top six overall in Sports Medicine. Other students who competed include: Leeta Brown - First Aid and CPR; Jasmine Davis - First Aid and CPR; Shannon Wagner - Medical Terminology; Comaneci Christie - Nursing Assisting; Lauren McGill - Sports Medicine; Justin Barnes - Sports Medicine; and Mynisha Hall - Sports Medicine.

Clover Band Brings home awards
CLOVER -- The Clover High School Band Locked up three first place finishes and a fourth place finish at the 2009 South Carolina Band Directors Association Winter Ensemble State Championships last weekend.
The Indoor Percussion group took first place in the Concert Percussion Scholastic A Division and in the Scholastic Marching A PSA Division.
Varsity Winterguard scored a first place finish in the Scholastic AA Division, and the Junior Varsity Winterguard placed fourth in the Scholastic Regional A Division.
Local USC student wins award
CLOVER -- Megan Sinclair, a visual communications major at the University of South Carolina from Clover was among six USC students to win awards from the American Advertising Federation.
Six Student Media students were honored for their creative design work at the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands ADDY Awards on March 14. The student designers won eight individual ADDY awards in the competition, including four Student Gold ADDY awards.
Sinclair won a Student Silver ADDY for "Lipstick Jungle" featuring Survivor Jamie Dugan cover design for the February 2008 issue of Garnet & Black magazine.
Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation, the local ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tiered, national competition to recognize and reward creative excellence in the art of advertising. Local gold winners are eligible for the district-level ADDY competition.
The Office of Student Media at the USC offers students the opportunity to gain experience in print, broadcast, online media, advertising and graphic design. The office houses The Daily Gamecock student newspaper, Garnet & Black student magazine, WUSC-FM student radio, SGTV student television, Creative Services student design staff and the student Advertising office.
Clover students earn state awards
CLOVER -- Eight Family, Career and Community Leaders of America students attended State Competition in Columbia last weekend. All eight student worked hard preparing their projects.
Missy Barnett, Washonda Poole and Rebecca Thiessen placed first in Chapter Showcase Display as a team; May Vang took first place in Interior Design; LaKisha Pride won first place in Early Childhood Education; Lauren Rowley placed first in Clothing Construction; Edna Janson placed second in Illustrated Talk, occupational division; and Sydney Lopour placed third in senior division.
All first place students will advance to National Competition in Nashville, Tenn. in July. Janson and Lopour both made an impact on their audiences. Both chose topics close to their hearts. Illustrated Talk draws a lot of competition because students can choose the topic they want to address. Janson chose to speak on child abuse and it's lasting effects, presenting a power point. Lopour chose to share her first hand experience with inclusion, creating a display board as her visual.
Area student make USC President's, Dean's lists
BOWLING GREEN -- Crystal Dale Slavens, of Bowling Green earned a spot on the USC Fall 2008 President's Honor Role and the Dean's List by maintaining a 4.0 GPA with a full class load.
Pancake supper
CLOVER -- Biblical Studies Released Time will sponsor a pancake supper at Clover First United Methodist Church 5 - 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 4. The following schools are participating: Bethany Elementary, Kinard Elementary, Griggs Road Elementary and Clover Middle School. Students of these Bible classes will perform. There will be tickets for sale at the door - $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. For more information, contact Carol Stanford at 222-7885.
Head Start accepting applications
Carolina Community Actions Inc., Head Start is now accepting applications for children ages 3 and 4 for the 2009-'10 program year. Head Start serves children from low-income families and children with disabilities. Children with disabilities, including emotional, intellectual and physical (visual, hearing, speech, crippling and other chronic impairments) are eligible regardless of their family income level. Services provided by Head Start include education, nutrition, medical, dental, social services, transportation, parent involvement and special education services.
CCA Head Start participates in the USDA Child Care Food Program and breakfast and lunch are served to Head Start children at no cost to the families and without regard to race, color, national origin, sex or disabilities.
A legal birth certificate, certificate of immunization, proof of income for the 2008 calendar year and social security numbers of all persons in the household must be provided when applying.
