Piedmont West clinic in York reduces overnight hours

YORK -- 

The Piedmont West clinic in York has reduced overnight operating hours, saying that patient volume was not enough to continue operating the clinic around the clock.

The center operated by Piedmont Medical Center opened about five years ago offering 24-hour urgent care, except on Sundays.

PMC CEO Bill Masterson told York city officials during a recent public safety committee meeting that it was not feasible to operate the clinic around the clock because few patients sought care during those hours, according to a memo from council member Bill Miller, chairman of the committee.

In response to phone calls and emails seeking comment from PMC, hospital spokeswoman Katie Ferguson released a statement saying only that the “hours were reduced due to extremely low usage during overnight hours.”

The clinic at 1190 Filbert Highway, York, lists hours on its web site of 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Masterson told city officials that, on average, only eight people were treated at the center between 7 p.m. and midnight and that only three were treated from midnight to 6 a.m., according to Miller’s memo.

York County Manager Jim Baker said PMC’s contract with the county called for the urgent care center in York to be operated 24 hours, except on Sunday, for five years, as “a pilot project.”

Baker said that provision of the hospital’s contract ended in June 2011 and there has been no discussion of renewing it. “Their obligations under the agreement ended and they announced they were going to cut back their hours,” Baker said.
