York’s Carroll named Carolina Panthers Coach of the Week

YORK -- 

Bobby Carroll, second-year head coach for York Comprehensive High School, has been named this season's third 2012 Carolina Panthers High School Coach of the Week.

The Panthers’ High School Coach of the Week program recognizes high school coaches, who, through hard work and dedication to young people, have made a difference in the lives of their players, school and community.

In his first year as head coach of the Cougars, the York native and former Shrine Bowl participant compiled a 10-4 record, finishing second in the region as the Cougars advanced to the upper state championship game.

The Cougars remain an elite Region 3-AAAA team, and have been ranked in the top 10 in 4A most of this season.

While Carroll is appreciative of the Panthers' Coach of the Week recognition, he is typically humble in responding to such accolades.

“I'm not big on personal attention,” Carroll said. “All of the players and coaches contribute to the success of our football program.

“We want to put York football on the map. We want accolades for the team. It's not about one person.”

Carroll is a product of the York School district who has 30 years of coaching experience with Northwestern, South Pointe and York Comprehensive high schools.

His teams have ranked No. 1 in the High School Football Team Massey Rankings, Max Pre Ranked third nationally, region champions, upper state champions, state runner-up and multiple state championships.

He was selected to serve as the linebackers coach at the Under Armour All-American Football game in 2010.

A sign in the locker room reads, “Teammates for a season, Friends for a Lifetime.”

Carroll said that’s what coaching is about.

“Bringing a group of young men, a community and families together, making them a team. We teach young men how to become grown men, how to be a good son, uncle, brother, friend and one day a great husband and a father,” he said.

“Our staff teaches the skills to allow them to become effective leaders in society. They too can one day make a difference in the community. My old football coach made me proud to be a part of our team, school and community. we are simply returning the favor,” he said.

Since assuming the head coach position in 2010, Carroll established a mentoring program for the football team and implemented a summer football camp for youth in the community.

When a family in York lost their son, Carroll and the team stepped up and donated money to pay for burial costs. They also volunteer for the Salvation Army to ring the bell at Christmas, participate in Adopt the Highway litter pick-up, read to elementary school kids during Read Across America, assist in after-school programming and participate in walks to support Relay for Life and Child Abuse Awareness.

Said Carroll: “When the dust settles at the end of each day, all that remains is the community and the football team is one piece of that puzzle. We teach them that you cannot make it through this world alone; it requires helping others and them helping you, making everything a team effort.

“This job is all about bringing out the positive character in a young man by teaching him a successful formula of hard work, discipline, positive attitude, dealing with adversity, commitment to do the right thing, winning the right way and being humble.”

In recognition of Carroll, Carolina Panthers Charities will donate $1,000 to York Comprehensive High School’s athletic department.

The 2012 Coach of the Week class will be honored with an on-field presentation during the Carolina Panthers home game versus the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, Dec. 23. At that time, the 2012 Coach of the Year will be announced and the winning coach will receive an additional $2,000 grant for that school's athletic department.
