Clover girls tennis team ends banner season

CLOVER -- 

he Clover High School girls tennis team lost a closely-contested match to J.L. Mann in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs. But the Lady Blue Eagles had a lot to feel good about despite the loss, finishing the season as Region 3-AAAA champions with a sparkling 16-1 record.

The Lady Blue Eagles had a lot to feel good about despite the loss, finishing the season as Region 3-AAAA champions with a sparkling 16-1 record.

“It was a tough, nail-biting loss,” said head coach Renee Farris. “Our kids played well and lost a close match. “I am proud of the team for a great season.”

Farris lauded senior participants Kate Stewart, Caroline Hester, Merritt Miller and Maggie Keefe for their contributions to the program.

Stewart maintained the No. 1 singles slot throughout the season and Hester was unbeaten playing No. 3 singles. Miller teamed with Anna Miszkiewicz to form to the No. 2 doubles team.

“We will miss our seniors, who played well and represented their school well,” Farris said. “We have a good group returning and will continue to work hard to keep the tennis program at a high level.”

All of the matches with JL Mann were competitive, with Mann prevailing 4-3 in the grueling match.

• Singles results: No. 1, Emily Erickson (M) defeated Kate Stewart 2-6; 4-6; No. 2, Merritt Phillips (M) defeated Harriet Hall 6-7, 3-6; No. 3, Caroline Hester (C) defeated Chandler Blackwell 7-6; 6-2; No. 4, Elizabeth Edmunds (C) defeated Elizabeth Collins 6-4; 7-6; No. 5, Corey Brom (C) defeated Mary Hunter Hyche 6-4; 6-3.

• Doubles: No. 1, Erickson/Blackwell (M) defeated Stewart/Hall 6-2; 6-3; No. 2, Aylson Brower/ Caroline Powell (M) defeated Anna Miszkiewicz/ Merritt Miller 6-7; 6-1; 10-6.

The CHS girls coasted in the opening round playoff match, shutting out Laurens 7-0 on the Clover High courts.
