Seventh-grade Cougars win conference championship

The York Middle School seventh-grade football team finished the season unbeaten with an 8-0 slate and won the York County Middle School Association conference championship.

The Cougars won the county title by defeating Springfield Middle School 30-8 in the YCMSA championship game.

The Cougars got off to a fast start with Ashley Jeter returning the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. Dondre Douglas added the 2-point conversion, making the score 8-0.

Hard running by Douglas got the Cougars to the 3-yard-line where Tajh Reid-Stanley pounced in for the score from three yards out for a 14-0 lead. Jeter added the 2-point conversion, extending the lead to 16-0.

The Cougars led 16-8 at halftime after Springfield scored a touchdown and added a 2-point conversion. In the second half, the Cougars turned up the defensive pressure and shut down the Mustangs.

Cameron Jones hit JT Sanders with a 30-yard TD pass, stretching the lead 22-8.

Late in the fourth quarter, Jones' pick 6 sealed the championship for the Cougars with an interception return for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-8. Douglas added the 2-point conversion, making the final score 30-8.

The Cougars created four turnovers on the night, including interceptions by Jeter, Jones and Malcolm Kennedy and a Shaq Harris fumble recovery.

The Cougars' dominant play throughout the season is evident in the team's statistical advantage — scoring 322 points on offense while giving up 52 total points.

The team averaged 40 points per game while limiting its opponents to six points per game.

“This was a great group of players to coach who really listen and wanted to learn the game,” head coach Rob Farris said. “Their goal from day one was the conference championship and an undefeated season.

“The didn't let anything come between that of reaching their goal.”

Added Farris, “These boys worked extremely hard all year long.”

Farris thanked the Cougar fans who traveled to support the team.
