Seventh-grade golfer competes at elite level
YORK Sarah Smith, a seventh-grade student at York Middle School, made her presence felt in a huge way as a member of the York Comprehensive High School varsity girls golf team this season.
Smith was the only Region 3-AAAA golfer to advance to the upstate tournament at Smithfields Country Club in Easley, where she shot an 80 to qualify for state championship play.
Smith competed in the Class AAAA State Championships at Lexington Country Club, finishing 39th against the best golfers in the state in cold and windy conditions.
We are proud of Sarah commented YCHS girls golf coach Paula Blackwell. She has a bright future in golf.
A versatile athlete, Smith made the seventh-grade middle school basketball cut last week and is competing for playing time with the Lady Cougars.

Green Dragon monument committee still accepting donations
YORK A group of York High School alumni spearheading a fundraising campaign to erect a Green Dragon monument at the front campus of Harold C. Johnson Elementary School has reached its projected goal.
Gene Knight Jr., a 1976 graduate of York High and spokesperson for the alumni group, said the excitement generated by the 100th game of the York-Clover football rivalry pushed the fundraiser over the top.
Though the $6,500 goal has been reached, Knight said donations are still being accepted.
We are extremely grateful and appreciative of ALL of the donations to the project, commented Knight.
Now we have to get to work putting brick, mortar and granite together to immortalize YHS and the Green Dragon. If there are YHS alumni who havent donated yet and want to give money to the project, we will need funds moving forward for the maintenance of the monument.
Added Knight, We want it to always look clean and fierce.
The alumni committee received unanimous approval from the York School District One Board of Trustees to place the monument at the corner of East Jefferson Street and Bratton Avenue on the front Harald C. Johnson campus.
Donations can be made by sending a check or money order to: YHS Green Dragon Alumni, P. O. Box 1232, York, S.C. 29745.
Donors will receive acknowledgement of their donation via postcard. Alumni can read about the monument and download a copy of Brian Lawtons design at the committees website at www.yorkgreendragons.com.
