YORK --
The York Comprehensive High School baseball and softball teams are combining efforts to create an alumni patio and walkway at the school's plush baseball/softball complex.
The brick program will allow anyone who played or coached baseball or softball for Hickory Grove, Sharon, Jefferson or York high schools, as well as York Comprehensive High School, to purchase a brick that will become part of a permanent alumni monument.
“We wanted to do something for all the past baseball and softball players and coaches that was permanent,” said YCHS head baseball coach Scot Kiggans. “We also felt it was important for those currently involved in the programs and those that will be in the future to recognize all the alumni that came before them and built these programs over many years.
“We hope the community embraces it and we look forward to seeing all the names that will be placed there in the spring.”
Susan Lee Ballard, head coach of the Lady Cougar softball team, echoed Kiggans' sentimets.
“We are excited about the brick alumni program getting underway,” she said. “It is good to see the softball program able to be a part of this project.
“Having played for York and coached years back and coaching again, I am excited to see some of the alumni bricks from my past teammates and players.
“And that is a small part of the participants of the softball program through the years.”
Concluded Ballard, “Once the program is going, alumni will be able to purchase bricks each year. This allows a unique opportunity for those that graduate each year.”
Kiggans noted that alumni bricks can be purchased for sons, daughters and relatives who may have been part of the programs.
“This program will be the beginning of a proud tradition of our great student-athletes being honored in a permanent manner at our baseball/softball facility at YCHS,” noted Kiggans. “It will allow present members of the team to see and read all of the great alumni that came before them.
“We look forward to creating an awesome alumni area for many years to come that everyone will be proud of.”
There are two options to purchase a finished brick recognizing a former student-athlete.
Option number one includes a 4-by-8-inch brick, with three lines of up to 18 characters per line at a cost of $60. A school symbol will be included for an additional $10. Theses include a Cardinal, Bulldog, Green Dragon, Blue Devil, Cougar or Cougar paw.
A two-brick family deal is available at a cost of $100.
Option number two includes an 8-by-8-inch brick, with six lines of up to 18 characters per line at a cost of $80. School symbol included for an additional $10.
