YORK --
The York Comprehensive High School wrestling program is flourishing with record-breaking participation and top-10 rankings.
First-year head coach Todd Hershberger assembled the wrestlers during last week's first Main Event in the YCHS main gym and cafeteria. It included dinner and a black/gray scrimmage involving wrestlers from middle school to the varsity level before a crowd of nearly 400.
“The idea of a Main Event came about on a whim,” Hershberger said. “We had outstanding response and fed 375 people in the school cafeteria. We are proud of the opportunity to showcase our wrestling program in an event like this.”
Hershberger said the wrestling program includes 48 participants at YCHS and 41 at York Middle School. “In addition, we have a jayvee team playing its own schedule,” he noted.
The YCHS varsity wrestling team has competed successfully against the best teams in the state in recent years, including a top-10 ranking for much of the season.
“We expect more of the same this season,” he said.
Said Hershberger in a message to those attending the Main Event: “As we start another season of York wrestling, I am excited to see all of the wonderful friends and family that York wrestling has involved. This program could not succeed without the many hours of hard work and sacrifice that many of you have and will put into the program.
“Please know that as coaches we take our role seriously and realize that we have an opportunity to influence these young men. Our goal is to be positive influences that lead these guys in the right way.”
The YCHS wrestling team began the season with last week's 55-24 win at White Knoll.
“We won 10 of the 14 varsity matches,” Hershberger said. “The jayvee wrestling team was also victorious in winning 11 of 18 matches.”
Varsity winners and weight classifications included the following: John Stewart, 113; Coleman Southard, 120; Cole Rumfelt, 132; LJ Walton, 138; Clayton Julian, 145; Trent Hull, 160; Thomas Wilkerson, 170; Rainey Moore, 182; Chance Kelly, 195; Ethan Whitesides, 220.
