CHS girls roll past Hunter Huss for second win

CLOVER -- 

The Clover High School girls basketball team entered this week's play with a 2-0 slate following last Friday's 62-24 conquest of visiting Hunter Huss.

Sophomore forward Elizabeth Edmunds, who paced the scoring with 14 points, got the Lady Blue Eagles off to a roaring start with back-to-back baskets in the opening moments of the game.

Balanced scoring contributed to the offensive surge as the CHS girls built a 17-3 first quarter advantage.

Edmunds' medium-range jumper pushed the lead to 19-7 as the Lady Blue Eagles continued to dominate in the second quarter.

Sophomore guard/forward Ryehia Robbins scored the next basket on a textbook assist from senior playmaker Aaliyah Knox.

Junior guard Zasu Carpenter finished with back-to-back baskets as the Lady Blue Eagles expanded the lead to 30-10 at halftime.

CHS head girls coach Sherer Hopkins said so many players getting into the game this early in the season should help the Lady Blue Eagles in games down the road.

“Players coming off the bench to contribute gained valuable experience,” Hopkins said of the player rotation. “The crowd enjoys it and the kids enjoy it.”

Hopkins said she was pleased with the players' overall performance at this stage of the season.

“We still have things to fix,” she noted. “We always aim for the region portion of our schedule.

“We want to peak when region play begins.”

Edmunds, who was the team's leading scorer the first week of the season, said ball movement from her teammates has given her the opportunity for double-digit scoring.

“We've had good team play and are playing together,” she said. “We're working hard to play better defense.”

Edmunds said she devoted much time to improving her game over the summer.

“I am playing with more confidence,” she said.

Senior mainstay Aaliyah Knox, a swift playmaking guard, had another solid floor game against Hunter Huss.

“I play with passion and give it all, win or lose,” commented Knox, who has assumed a leadership role this season. “I will take the ball to the hoop as often as I can, knowing that it's an opportunity to score or draw a foul.”

Knox said she is playing with confidence and helping the less experienced players develop their game.

Knox is a proven floor leader whose dribble penetration is among the region's best.

“I think we'll do well in the region this year,” she said.

Rounding out the scoring against Huss, Zasu Carpenter finished with 13, Ryehia Robbins 8, Maggie Ballard 5, Alexis Brice, Lauren Richardson and Knox, 4 each; Ashia Good and Shay Hall, 3 each and Logan Richardson and Katelynn Kipp, 2 each.

In the season opener last week, the Lady Blue Eagles bested Charlotte Country Day 42-31.

Edmunds had a dominant game, scoring a game-high 26 points. Robbins and Richardson each scored 7 points and Knox had 2.

The Lady Blue Eagles travel to Hunter Huss Friday, with the action slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
