26 York Co. stores apply to sell beer, win on Sunday

YORK COUNTY -- 

Twenty-six establishments in York County have applied to sell beer and wines at grocery and convenience stores on Sunday, according to the state’s Department of Revenue.

Sales at some locations started Sunday.

The Department of Revenue has been issuing seven-day sale permits to stores already licensed to offer beer or wine for purchase Monday through Saturday.

Voters endorsed Sunday sales in a November referendum. The approved ballot measure does provide for the seven-day sale of hard spirits and liquor stores will remain closed on Sunday.

On Sunday, signs could be seen at stores across York County trying to drum up extra sales, but customers said it is too early to tell what the extra day will bring.

“It’s still relatively new, so you know, it’s one of those things that you have to take slowly and keep an eye on, because you know, it is an extra day where people are going to be able to buy alcohol and even drink,” said customer Orlando Vereen.

In Lancaster County, restaurants can now start serving alcohol on Sundays.
