The York Parks and Recreation Department’s youth basketball program is in full swing. “We have good participation in our winter sports program,” said activities director Julie Hollis. “The kids are playing for rec teams and church teams in various age groups.”

“We have good participation in our winter sports program,” said activities director Julie Hollis. “The kids are playing for rec teams and church teams in various age groups.”
Hollis lauded the efforts of York Comprehensive High School head girls basketball coach Paula Blackwell, assistant coach Kristi Kemp and varsity Lady Cougar players for their willingness to oversee the Saturday morning Junior Cougars basketball program.
“We appreciate their help each year,” assured Hollis. “Varsity players provide instruction for ages 8 to 14.”
Blackwell said the players embrace the opportunity to assist youngsters aspiring to play varsity basketball someday.
“Our players enjoy working with the kids and providing instruction,” she said. “A lot of kids have learned the fundamentals of the game through participation in the Junior Cougars program.”
The Junior Cougars program is held on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. through Saturday, Feb. 9. The instructional sessions are held in the York Recreation Center gym on White Rose Lane.
Hotshots basketball action, ages 11 to 14, resumes Thursday with double-header action at the rec gym’s court A.
The Eagles battle the Huskies at 6 p.m., followed by the Bucks and Gators at 7 p.m. Action slated for Thursday, Jan. 10 includes Huskies and Gators at 6 p.m., with the Eagles and Bucks closing out play at 7 p.m.
Biddy basketball action, ages 5 to 7, will be held Saturday, with the Tar Heels set to battle the Yellow Jackets at 10:30 a.m. and the Blue Devils against the Tigers at 11:15 a.m. Action for Saturday, Jan. 12 includes the Yellow Jackets against the Tigers at 10:30 a.m. and the Tar Heels to face the Blue Devils at 11:15 a.m.
Zappers youth basketball action, ages 8 to 10, will be held Saturday at court B.
The triple-header slate begins at 10:30 a.m., with the Celtics against the Mavericks. Next will be the Heat against the Knicks at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Bobcats and Lakers at 12:30 p.m.
Games slated for Saturday, Jan. 12 include the Knicks and Celtics at 10:30 a.m. Bobcats and Mavericks at 11:30 a.m. and Lakers and Heat at 12:30 p.m.
