The York Comprehensive High School cagers entertain Region 3-AAAA foe Northwestern Friday.

The action begins with the Lady Cougars hosting the Lady Trojans at 6:30 p.m., with the Cougars pitted against the Northwestern boys at 8 p.m.

The Cougars advanced to the consolation championship game of last month’s Clover Optimist Classic by defeating Chesterfield.

Rival Clover prevailed 65-58 in the consolation title game.

The Cougars outscored the host Blue Eagles 17-11 in the third quarter, slicing Clover’s lead to 44-42.

But the Blue Eagles were equal to the challenge, pulling away down the stretch to win by seven points.

DeShaw Andrews paced the scoring for the Cougars with a game-high 20 points. Kaiyon Schrouder and Daurice Simpson also scored in double-figures with 17 and 11 points, respectively. Markell Castle scored 6 points and Josh McCoy had 4.

The Lady Cougars hosted the Bank of York/Wing Bonz Tournament last week, with varsity action in the main gym and jayvee games in the auxiliary gym.

Though losing to Broome and Gaffney, the YCHS girls remained active during the holidays, drawing from the experience of competing against quality teams before returning to region play.

“We had a tough two days but played hard against a very good Gaffney team,” Blackwell said of the tournament grind.

Sophomore post player Carrie Lee Lancaster continued to be an offensive presence in the lane, scoring 16 points in the loss to Gaffney.

Blackwell noted that YCHS basketball facilities that are second to none draw quality teams to the holiday tournament.

“We had eight varsity girls teams and four jayvee girls teams,” she said.
