Clover Lady Blue Eagles eye South Pointe

CLOVER -- 

The Lady Blue Eagles of Clover High School , the defending Region 3-AAAA champions, resume region play Friday when they play on the road at South Pointe.

The first game of double-header action Friday is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the South Pointe gym.

With freshman forward Elizabeth Edmunds scoring the game’s first eight points, the CHS girls defeated rival York 54-27 before an enthusiastic crowd Friday in the York Comprehensive High School main gym.

Edmunds, who paced the scoring for the Lady Blue Eagles with 12 points, nailed shots from long-range in addition to her scoring presence around the basket.

“I shot with confidence tonight,” declared Edmunds in a postgame interview. “We were motivated because of the rivalry with York.

“The key to future success is to play solid defense and to remain focused each time we take the floor.”

CHS head coach Sherer Hopkins alluded to Edmunds’ productive first quarter against the host Lady Cougars.

“Elizabeth has extended her game with outside shooting success,” Hopkins said. “She did a good job tonight.”

Hopkins was pleased that the CHS girls took control of the game in the early going.

“Our kids played well,” she noted. Coach Blackwell does a good job with the York team.

“It’s fun playing York, a rivalry game the kids look forward to.”

The Lady Blue Eagles came out firing on all cylinders, building a 13-point lead after the first quarter and leading by 15 points at halftime.

With Edmunds leading the scoring barrage, Sydney Sanders was next with 9 points. Alexis Brice scored 8 points; Maggie Ballard, 7; Aaliyah Knox, 6; Ryehia Robbins, 5; Lauren Richardson, 3; and Ashia Good and Logan Richardson, 2 each.

The Lady Blue Eagles fell to a hot shooting Northwestern team 60-32 on the road in an earlier game last week.

The CHS girls stayed within striking distance until the Lady Trojans pulled away midway through the second quarter and held the advantage the remainder of the game.

“They are a great team,” Hopkins said of Northwestern after the game. “We played defense but couldn’t find the basket.”

Brice, a senior guard adept at handling the ball, finished with 13 points to lead the Clover girls.

“The guards have to step up and help the post players out,” said Brice. “I play with confidence and try to use my quickness to take it to the hoop. We need to get back to the kind of play that’s made us successful, taking good shots and rebounding.”
