Knights give more than $4K to Special Olympics
LAKE WYLIE The All Saints Council No. 14475 of the Knights of Columbus recently presented a check to the Clover Area Special Olympics for more than $4,300.
The money was raised by the Knight’s annual “Operation Hope” collection drive, held for several weeks outside of local area stores including Bi-Lo and Food Lion supermarkets in Lake Wylie and Clover; and Lake Wylie Walmart.
“These funds have allowed us to expand the events of our ‘Unified Program’ in both Clover High School and Clover Middle School, and will help significantly with the high costs of transportation of our athletes to and from events, and to purchase uniforms and equipment,” said Patti Myers, special education teacher in Clover schools and coordinator for the Clover Area Special Olympics.
The Special Olympics Unified Program partners intellectually disabled athletes with non-disabled partners to complete in various sporting events, including bowling and badminton.
Dan Hamilton, grand knight of All Saints Council, said the Operation Hope Program was initiated in 1977 by the South Carolina State Council of the Knights of Columbus, and is dedicated to increasing the self-reliance and dignity of citizens with intellectual disabilities.
“Special Olympics shares this philosophy and does a terrific job towards meeting this goal,” he said.
