11 York teachers receive Family Trust grants

Family Trust Federal Credit Union awarded more than $10,000 in grants to 43 educators at a banquet Jan. 31 at York Comprehensive High School in York.

Eleven educators from York received or shared one of the 31 $250 grants and five $500 collaborative grants.

The York school district winners are: Kathy Blackwelder, Jefferson Elementary; Angela Covington, York Middle; Tanya Duncan, Carrie Lawton, Leesa Parker and Donna Field, all of Hunter Street Elementary; Mary Beth Harper, Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary; Kathleen Mills, Harold C. Johnson Elementary; and Leslie Templeton, Sue Hilton and Tracy Warren, all of York Comprehensive High

Since the Family Trust Teacher Grant program was established 13 years ago, more than $70,000 has been awarded to over 275 educators in York County.

YCHS students plan Empty Bowls fundraiser

The annual Empty Bowls Event to benefit York’s PATH will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center Culinary Arts dining hall.

The groups that are involved in this yearly community service project are the York Comprehensive High School art students, Student Council, the technology center FCCLA and the chefs of the culinary arts program.

For a donation of $10, diners can choose a ceramic bowl piece made by the YCHS art clubs and art students and also also enjoy a homemade meal of soup, cornbread and sweet tea.

CHS quiz team scores 2 victories

The Clover High School Academic Quiz Team opened its season Feb. 7, with two victories in the team’s only home match of the season.

Led by freshman Grayson Love, Clover defeated Gaffney High School with a score of 300 to 170. The Blue Eagles then knocked off Blacksburg High School with a score of 160 to 90.

Love was the high scorer for both matches. Individuals scoring in the matches were: Cullen Glankler, Mary MacInnis, AJ Ciurlik, Annie Sanford, Ricky Haley, Alyssa Ciurlik, Gage Yukob, Carson Hicks and Khoi Tran.

Clover students win FBLA awards

Clover High School students who are members of the Future Business Leaders of American participated in a Distrist One competition on Feb. 2 at York Comprehensive High School.

The Clover students brought home 26 awards, including nine for first place. The top five performers in each event will move on to compete at the state level in April. Staff advisors to the group are Quentin McGill, Leslie Knutsen, Lee Ann Seay, Amy Moss and Rita Graves.

York Intermediate names Cool Cougars

York Intermediate School has named Cool Couars. They are, Team 6-2, Summer Ott, Jordan Dodge, Katelin Faile and Jose Cervantes; and Team 6-3, Tatyana Douglas, Samari Kennedy, Paris Adams and Katheryn Spears.

Pre-K, kindergarten signups for Clover

Clover School District pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration is scheduled for the week of March 4. Parents should register children at their current elementary school assignment based on the 2012-13 attendance lines.

Parents may register children at Bethany, Bethel, Griggs Road, Kinard, and Larne from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 4-8. Registration hours at Crowders Creek are 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 4-8.

All six elementary schools will have an evening registration period 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5.

To be eligible for pre-k, children must be 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2013. To be eligible for kindergarten, children must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2013.

Parents should bring the child’s legal birth certificate with the state seal, two proofs of residency with the name and address of the parent registering the child and up-to-date immunization records. For information, contact Pam Cato at 803-810-8013.

Love, logic parenting class offered in Clover

A six-week session of the Love & Logic parenting class will be offered to Clover parents beginning Feb. 20.

Classes will be offered from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday evenings, Feb. 20 through March 25 at the Clover Resource Center.

Child care will be provided for school-aged children.

There is a $12 per person cost for materials.

Deadline to register is Feb. 15. Completed registration forms, available on the Clover school district Web site at, should be turned in to parents’ school guidance counselor.
