May 7 election planned for York council seat

YORK -- 

A special election will be held May 7 to fill a vacancy for the District 4 York City Council seat formerly held by Harmon Merritt. Merritt, who held the seat since 2010, died Feb. 6 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Filing for candidates for the District 4 seat will open at noon Friday, Feb. 22 and will continue until noon Monday, March 4 with the York County Registraton and Elections Office in York, said elections supervisor Wanda Hemphill.

Any resident who wants to file for the City Council seat must be a registered voter and a resident of District 4.

Filing should be done in person at the registration and elections office in the E. C. Black Building, 13 S. Congress St., downtown York.

Candidates are required to submit a $50 filing fee and complete a Statement of Intention of Candidacy. They also must provide a printed copy of their Statement of Economic Interest form and verification of electronic filing of this form.
