Jake Tolin named for wrestling classic

CLOVER Jake Tolin, a Clover High School senior, has been selected for the 2013 Best Western North/South Wrestling All-Star Classic. The event will be held at North Myrtle Beach High School March 2-3.

Tolin was chosen by members of the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association. His wrestling record this season includes 30 wins in the 132-pound weight category.

Cougar baseball team to host events

YORK The York Comprehensive High School baseball team will host a preseason jamboree Saturday at the YCHS baseball complex, with the action slated to begin at high noon.

The Cougars will be joined by York County rivals Northwestern and Fort Mill.

YCHS baseball coach Scot Kiggans noted that each jamboree participant will play four innings under preseason guidelines mandated by the South Carolina High School League.

The Cougars will follow Saturday’s jamboree action with a Tuesday double-header at home as part of the annual Chester Preseason Tournament.

The YCHS team will host Gaffney at 5 p.m. and longtime rival Clover at 7 p.m. Five-inning games will be played as part of the preseason tournament format.

The Chester Preseason Tournament extends to March 2, with the Cougars’ regular season opener slated for March 5 at Rock Hill. The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Bearcat Country.

Six YCHS grapplers qualify for state

YORK Six York Comprehensive High School grapplers, led by upper state title winner Robert Cunningham, have qualified for this weekend’s individual State Wrestling Championship tournament.

The state championship competition will be Friday and Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center, where state champions will be determined in 4A classification as well as 3A and 2A-1A classifications.

Competing in the 126-pound weight class, Cunningham was crowned an upper state champion when he defeated Fort Mill’s Jake Strong in the finals.

Other state championship qualifiers included Cougar mainstays Cole Rumfelt and Rainey Moore. Each placed second in upper state competition, Rumfelt at 132-pounds and Moore at 160.

Rounding out the state qualifiers for the Cougars were upper state third-place finishers Coleman Southard at 120-pounds, Chance Kelly at 195 and Beau Nunn in the heavyweight classification.

The top four from each of the 14 weight classes qualified for the state tournament. There will be 27 wrestlers from York County at the state championship event.

Conrad first Blue Eagle 4A upper state champ

CLOVER Competing in the 220-pound weight class, Clover High School sophomore grappler Zach Conrad earned the school’s first ever 4A upper state championship in last weekend’s competition.

Conrad avenged a loss earlier in the season to a wrestler from Dorman to make the finals, then returned the favor again by defeating a Nation Ford wrestler he lost to in the Region 3-AAAA Tournament.

“Zach becomes the second upper state champion in school history,” said CHS wrestling coach Michael Fitzgerald.

Tyler McElheney was the 3A upper state champion in the 112-pound weight class in 2006.

Senior mainstay Cole Gregory fought back after a loss in the upper state semifinals and took third place to qualify for the state tournament.

“Cole dislocated his elbow last year in the match to qualify for the state, so this was a big win for him,” said Fitzgerald.

Cole and Zach will wrestle this weekend in state championship competition at the Anderson Civic Center,” Fitzgerald said of the twosome’s appearance in the prestigious event.

Volunteer coaches sought

YORK Bobby Carroll, head football coach at York Comprehensive High School, is seeking volunteer coaches to coach a York youth football team affiliated with American Youth Football.

“This team would be separate from the City of York Rec League teams,” said Carroll. “The AYF teams would run York’s offense and defense exclusively. “We’re looking for several coaches who would want to do this.”

“We are looking at starting a 10 and under team with 20 to 25 players,” he said.

York plans baseball, softball sign ups

YORK The York Parks and Recreation Department is registering players for the following sports:

• Dixie youth baseball for ages 9 to 12. Participants must be 9 years old and cannot turn 13 before May 1.

• ASA girls’ fast pitch softball for ages 7 to 12. A player’s league age is determined by their age as of Dec. 31, 2012.

Birth certificate is required at registration for all participants. Registration fee is $35.

Deadline to register is 7 p.m. Tuesday. Feb. 26. Late registration will be held Feb. 27 and 28, with an additional $10 penalty added to the fee. Registration times are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

Clover holding adult kickball registration

CLOVER The Clover Recreation Department is holding team registration for spring adult kickball.

Cougars basketball camp planned

YORK The annual Future Cougars Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 5 to 15 will be June 24-27 at the York Comprehensive High School main gym and auxiliary gym.

Instructional sessions focusing on fundamentals will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day. Cost is $60 per child.

Instruction will be provided by York Comprehensive High School coaches and players.

YCHS football camp planned June 17-20

YORK The York Comprehensive High School Football Summer Camp for boys will be June 17-20 at the YCHS stadium. The camp will partner with the Carolina Panthers. More information will be announced.
