Washington Mystics sign Latta

Former York Comprehensive High School basketball star Ivory Latta has signed a free agent contract to play for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.

Mike Thibault, head coach and general manager of the Mystics, is counting on Latta to bring stability to the point guard position.

“Our first priority was to sign Ivory Latta to lead this team at point guard for years to come,” Thibault said in a video interview on the Washington Mystics’ website. “We are glad to have Ivory fill a critical need.”

Latta, who began her WNBA career as the face of the Atlanta Dream, played for the Tulsa Shock the past two years. She was the leading scorer for the Shock last year.

“I am now a free agent and feel good about my situation with the WNBA,” said Latta during a visit in December. “Being a free agent allows me to make choices.”

Latta is in Israel, where she is playing for Maccabi Ramat Hen. In seven games, Latta is averaging 12.1 points and five assists per game.

The Mystics’ season opener is May 27 at Tulsa in a game that will be televised on ESPN2.

The WNBA’s Washington Mystics are owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, an integrated sports and entertainment company.

The group also owns the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals and Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

After finishing her high school career as the all-time scoring leader in the state, Latta played for the UNC-Chapel Hill Lady Tar Heels.
