York’s Moorefield to coach North-South All-Star Game

YORK Longtime York Comprehensive High School football coach John Moorefield has been selected as an assistant coach for the annual North-South All-Star Football Game in December in Myrtle Beach.

In addition to his duties as assistant football coach, Moorefield serves as assistant athletic director at YCHS.

“It’s good to be recognized by my peers and to represent our school in the North-South game,” said Moorefield, a former York football lineman. “I know Dorman coach Dave Gutshall, the head coach for the North-South game, and look forward to coaching with him.”

Former York line coach Tom Weaver once said Moorefield’s blocking technique was among the best in the state.

YCHS athletic director Steve Boyd was elated with the announcement.

“Coach Moorefield is very deserving of this honor,” Boyd said. “He is an outstanding coach and could be a head coach if he wanted to. We’re excited that he will represent our school and community.”

Clover players named all-region basketball

CLOVER Clover High School is represented on the All-Region 3-AAAA basketball team announced this week.

Arnaldo Toro, a 6-foot-7 post player with a dominant inside game and soft shooting touch, was named to the all-region boys team. Toro also was voted Newcomer of the Year.

Also named to the boys team was swift playmaking guard Taylor Hoover, a shooter and solid floor leader.

Named to the girls all-region basketball team was senior point guard Aliyah Knox and sophomore forward/center Elizabeth Edmunds.

Knox is a slick playmaking guard whose court presence and penetration dribble wreaked havoc on the opposition. Edmunds was a force inside and led the team in scoring, often with a smooth medium-range shot.

York sophomore cagers are all-region selections

YORK A pair of York Comprehensive High School sophomores have been named to the All-Region 3-AAAA basketball team.

Carrie Lee Lancaster, a 6-foot-1 post player whose dominance around the basket resulted in a 19-rebound game against Chester, was named to the all-region girls team.

Lancaster was among the region’s leading scorers at 15 points per game.

DeShaw Andrews, a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder with a feathery shooting touch, was named to the boys all-region team.

Andrews, a deadly outside shooter, also was among the region’s leading scorers.

Cougar Nation urged to join 5K Run with the Cougars

YORK With a primary goal of generating funds to bolster the York Comprehensive High School football program, the York Touchdown Club is hosting a March 23 5K Run with the Cougars.

The event will originate at the McCelvey Center starting point on East Jefferson Street, with race day registration accepted from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. prior to the 8 a.m. start.

YCHS head football coach Bobby Carroll encourages the Cougars’ legion of supporters to “Run with the Cougars” the day of the event.

York Touchdown Club President Tim Hartsoe noted that the 5K Run has been upgraded from last year.

“The run is road race certified, with the same course available that Summerfest runners use,” Hartsoe said. “We think these improvements will attract a bigger draw from people who are regulars participating in certified runs.”

Those registering between now and the day of the race will pay a fee of $35.

Registrants can go to yorktouchdownclub.com and click on ACTIVE.com to search for Run with the Cougars. Fill out the information and receive an email confirmation with all of the race information.

Mike Peterson, membership chair for the touchdown club, encourages the community to support the 5K Run and to become a member of the club.

“The 5K Run and the golf tournament, along with the annual membership dues, are our sources of revenue to meet the needs of the football team,” Peterson said.
