YCHS JV soccer defeats Chester

The York Comprehensive High School JV girls’ soccer team defeated Chester 2-0 at home last week. Goals by Kaitlyn Pruitt and Crystal Vang assured victory.

“Heather Pumphrey earned another shutout in goal, while the entire JV squad played well together in a team effort,” said head coach Sean Cody.

Blue Eagle golfers beat South Pointe

Clover High School’s Harrison Parrish, Aaron Harvell and Andrew White posted matching 41s to lead the Blue Eagles to a seven-stroke victory over South Pointe at River Hills Country Club.

Spencer Walker finished at 45 as Clover had a team score of 168 to South Pointe’s 175. The Blue Eagles improved to 6-1-1 for the season.

YCHS boys’ track second in three-way meet

The York Comprehensive High School boys’ track team placed second in a three-way meet with Nation Ford and Lancaster.

Top performers for York were: Rainey Moore (first in 110 hurdles and third in long jump), Tay Neely (second in 100m), Matt Ransom (second in 400m), Tra Mandrek (third in 400 hurdles), Chris Ingolia (second in 3200m), Kyron Schrouder (second in long jump), Kaiyon Schrouder (first in shot put and discus), Qadry Cobb (third in shot put), Tyrice Hayes (second in triple jump and first in high jump), and Lamin Yanseneh (third in triple jump).

York girls’ track splits three-way meet

The Lady Cougar track team came in second in a three-way meet, defeating Nation Ford and losing by a narrow margin to Lancaster.

Individual efforts were made by Alawna Orr, winning the 100-meter dash, Morgan Kuczler winning the 100-meter high hurdles and an honorable mention for Kinleigh Wilkerson with a discus throw of 84 feet, 7 inches. The 800-meter relay team of Dae Bigach, Grace Good, Kuczler and Jenna Dasilva, won its event.

YCHS boys’ soccer defeats Chester

The York Comprehensive High School boys’ soccer team defeated Chester 5-0.

Goals were scored by Buddy Anderson, Benji Amezcua, Cameron Lewis, Max McCartney and Uriel Perez Salinas.

Freshman Erick Pacheco got his first varsity win as goalkeeper.

York baseball team defeats Chester

The York Comprehensive High School baseball team nudged Chester 3-2 on Senior Night at YCHS. Senior hurler Jaime Donald went the distance and picked up the win.

“I felt comfortable on the mound tonight, mixing the fastball, slider and curve,” Donald said. “I kept the hitters off balance by changing speeds.”

The Cougars hit the ball up and down the lineup.

Will Horne had a single and RBI and Troy Baucom drove in a run on a fielder’s choice; Harrison Childers and Cody Ledford each had two hits. Tyler Szabo and Will Prince also hit safely for the Cougars.

In a previous game, the Cougars defeated South Pointe 2-1 behind the pitching of Ryan Gilbert and Childers’ go-ahead RBI single.

Lady Cougar softball falls to Nation Ford

The York Comprehensive High School girls’ softball team fell to Nation Ford on the road Friday 8-4.

Brianna Beverly was 3-for-3 at the plate for the YCHS girls. Brooke Ramsey, Rachel Petty, Mattie Ballard and Taylor Wilkerson also hit safely.

“We’ve battled injuries this season,” said head coach Susan Lee Ballard. “The kids are working hard and have improved their game. We feel good about the team as long as long as they are striving to improve.”

York JV softball defeats South Pointe, Lancaster

The YCHS JV softball team defeated South Pointe 10-0, with Brittany Ervin picking up the win. The JV team defeated Lancaster 4-1.

“Several key hits, smart base running and a solid defense decided the game,” said head coach Lynn Leake.

YCHS JV baseball slams South Pointe

The York Comprehensive High School JV baseball team defeated South Pointe 16-1 for its fourth win of the season.

Patch Edwards, Joe Gill, Caleb Clayton and Jacob Rabon each had multiple hits for the Cougars.

Bob Jenkins Herald York County Track Met Thursday

The Bob Jenkins Herald York County Track Meet will be Thursday at the York Comprehensive High School track facility.

The action begins at 5 p.m., with every York County team participating.

YCHS also will host the Region 3-AAAA Meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 25.

Free-play hours continue at York gym

Free play is a popular activity at the York Parks and Recreation Department.

Gym hours for ages 18 and older Monday through Friday include 10 a.m. to noon and 1-2:30 p.m.

Other free play hours include:

From 3-5 p.m. Monday, 17 and younger; 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, 17 and younger; 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, all ages; 3-5 p.m. Thursday, 17 and younger; 3-5 p.m. Friday, 17 and younger; 2-6 p.m. Sunday, all ages.

Cougars basketball camp June 24-27

The Annual Future Cougars Basketball Camp for boys and girls age 5 to 15 will be June 24-27 at the York Comprehensive High School main and auxiliary gyms.

Instructional sessions focusing on fundamentals will be 9-11:30 a.m. daily at a cost of $60 per child.

Daily instruction will be provided by York Comprehensive High School coaches and players.

“Let your child play where the Cougars play and learn the game from the Cougar basketball players,” said YCHS head girls’ basketball coach Paula Blackwell.

Employee and multi-child discount is $10 per child.

YCHS football camp June 17-20

The York Comprehensive High School Football Summer Camp for ages 6 to 13 will be June 17-20 at YCHS stadium.

The cost is $60 per player, or $100 for two siblings. The cost is $50 per player before May 20.

The June 19 camp activities will include Carolina Panthers Play 60 Junior Trains Camp.

Carroll said camp organizers once again will be partnering with the Carolina Panthers. The instructional noncontact football camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game.

Former York hoops star on title team

Former York basketball player Brittney Merriweather, a huge presence on the court for the Lady Cougars team, is a member of the Louisburg Junior College National Championship WBB team.

Louisburg defeated Mesa College 75-65 to earn the national title, finishing the season 32-3.

One of the highlights of Merriweather’s basketball career at York was when she was virtually unstoppable in a narrow loss to a Chester team ranked No. 1 in the state.

Cougars soccer camp June 10-13

The 2013 Cougar Soccer Camp for boys and girls will be June 10-13 at the York Comprehensive High School stadium.

Camp activities will be 6-8:30 p.m. at the stadium for boys and girls ages 5 to 9 and 10 to 15.

Instructors will include York boys’ soccer coaching staff and members of the Cougars soccer team. The cost is $50.

YCHS volleyball camp July 8-10

The York Comprehensive High School Girls Volleyball camp will be 9 a.m. to noon July 8-10 for ages 8 to 15.

The cost is $50 per participant. The camp will be led by Lady Cougars players and coaches. Camp T-shirt is included.
