Putting on a show

From staff reportsMay 7, 2013

— About 60 sixth-graders at York’s Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary School presented their historical fiction musical, “Hatshepsut, Queen of Denial” to parents on Thursday.

The students, led by music and choral teacher Beverly Mitchell, had been practicing the 40-minute show since late last fall. It featured about 30 costumed students with individual speaking parts and solos and about 10 songs by the group chorus.

Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh, ruled ancient Egypt successfully for more than 20 years, claiming the role after the death of her husband. Part of the sixth-grade course of study includes Egyptian civilizations.
