Lake Pointe wins state 1-A golf title

May 14, 2013

Lake Pointe Academy has captured its first state high school golf championship. The Lake Wylie school came out on top in division 1-A play of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools, defeating Fort Mill’s Walnut Grove Christian.

While the tournament was held in Greenwood, SC at The Links at Stoney Point, the competition was very local. The other team qualifying for the head-to-head 1-A match was Walnut Grove.

Combining for the win for the Mariners were Sam Maurer, Caleb Willingham, David Kidd and Mitchell Chalker.

Out of the battle between the two teams, Walnut Grove’s Ryan Shannon was actually the low individual scorer. Excellent scores from among the middle players pushed Lake Pointe on to victory. First-year coach Rob Yeager said Lake Pointe’s players gave themselves the opportunity for the championship through individual practice and a team focus on improved short game play.

In addition to Shannon, the Walnut Grove squad included Drew Lynch, Melodie Verkennes and Tanner Jobson.
