— First-year Clover High School head football coach Chad Smith will ring in the beginning of preseason practice with the return of “Midnight Madness.”

The popular event will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday at the CHS practice field.

Smith is no stranger to the earliest starting time allowed by the South Carolina High School League.

“We began preseason practice with Midnight Madness my three years at Easley,” he said.

The initial practice session will conclude at 1:30 a.m., with a practice to be held later in the day from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The Blue Eagles will resume preseason practice Saturday with a morning practice from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and an evening session from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The team will continue two-a-days next week, highlighted by a Thursday, Aug. 8, home scrimmage against Chapman.

Another preseason scrimmage will conclude a busy week when the Blue Eagles travel to nearby Kings Mountain, N.C., Aug. 10 for a 9 a.m. start.

New era begins

A new era in Blue Eagle football will begin Aug. 23 when South Florence visits Memorial Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff to start the 2013 high school football season. Forestview will make the short trek across the border to Memorial Stadium Aug. 30 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Blue Eagles will travel to Columbia to battle Spring Valley in a Sept. 6 road game slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.

After hosting Boiling Springs Sept. 13, the CHS football team opens Region 3-AAAA play against Rock Hill in Bearcat Country. Kickoff time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Rock Hill’s District Three Stadium.
