CLOVER — The resurgence of Clover High School football is spreading in Blue Eagles Country, according to leaders of the Clover Touchdown Club.
Longtime Blue Eagles loyalist Jamie McMackin, Clover Touchdown Club president, said he sees an excitement generated by new head football coach Chad Smith, the assistant coaches and players.
“We had a great turnout for Midnight Madness,” McMackin said of the preseason extravaganza revived by Smith. “There was excitement in the air, fireworks and more.”
McMackin said he has seen membership in the organization soar to more than 200, the highest level ever. The group also has received an early response to the Aug. 24 steak dinner and auction – a major Blue Eagles fundraiser each year, he said.
The doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Clover High School cafeteria, with dinner to be served at 6 p.m.
The cost is $60 for two steak dinners. There also will be cash drawings in the amount of $500 and $250 and multiple door prizes, including Blue Eagles memorabilia, for those in attendance.
Another highlight will be the annual live auction, with bidding for weekend beach trips and more.
The guest speaker will be the legendary Stan Spears, retired South Carolina adjutant general and former Blue Eagles quarterback in the late 1950s.
Advance tickets to the steak dinner and live auction will be on sale the next two Saturdays, Aug. 10 and 17, at the touchdown club’s spirit shack beneath the home stands at Clover Memorial Stadium.
In addition to the advance tickets for the steak dinner and auction, touchdown club memberships and Blue Eagles apparel will be available 9-11 a.m. each Saturday.
CHS Athletic Director Carroll Hester echoed Mackin’s enthusiasm. “The Clover community is excited about the football team,” said Hester. “The Clover Touchdown Club membership is the most ever. The players are excited about the season and we have great coaches. There’s a lot of anticipation.”
McMackin is optimistic about the remaining dinner tickets to be sold. “I look for the steak dinner to sell out,” he said.
Other officers of the club are: Gary Love, vice president; Wanda Summitt, treasurer; Skylar McMackin, secretary; Becky Standridge, education chair; and Justin Messer, membership chair.
