Harris Teeter, Bi-Lo purchase Piggly Wiggly locations

Bi-Lo and Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter dig the Pig.

The companies announced Thursday that they plan to purchase a combined 29 Piggly Wiggly locations in South Carolina and Georgia.

The locations, seven purchased by Harris Teeter and 22 by Bi-Lo, will close briefly and reopen under their new banners.

Harris Teeter is acquiring three stores in Charleston, two in Mount Pleasant, one on Kiawah Island and one on Isle of Palms. The move will double the number of Harris Teeter locations in the Charleston area.

And the acquisitions will give Harris Teeter more Charleston-area stores than its Florida-based rival Publix Super Markets, which operates 12 grocery stores in the area. Publix has been moving into Harris Teeter’s home turf in North Carolina with the opening of a Charlotte-based division.

Harris Teeter is itself being acquired for more than $2.4 billion by The Kroger Co., a deal expected to close later this year.

Terms of the Piggly Wiggly deal, expected to be completed in October, weren’t disclosed.

The company said employees will have a chance to continue working for the stores’ new owners.

Bi-Lo purchased 16 stores in South Carolina – one in Clover – and six in Georgia.

Bi-Lo, which is owned by private equity firm Lone Star Funds, bought Winn-Dixie last year for more than $560 million.
