Rotary clubs joint to support Clover assistance center

September 18, 2013

Coins for CAAC, a fundraising campaign sponsored by the Clover and the Lake Wylie Rotary clubs, kicked off this month.

This is the first time that the two organizations have joined together in a fundraising effort for the same cause. Why? Because we recognize that there is one very important agency that assists those in need throughout Clover and Lake Wylie — the Clover Area Assistance Center (CAAC).

Coins for CAAC is a way to involve the entire community in supporting the final renovations, phases two and three, for CAAC’s full-choice pantry. Neither Rotary is new to helping CAAC.

This past November, Lake Wylie helped to complete phase one of the full-choice pantry project by removing old shelving, installing new shelving and constructing a public donations sorting area.

For many years, the Clover Rotary has been providing yard and outdoor care for CAAC’s main building on S.C. 55. Additionally, Clover was heavily involved in the original renovations of the building in 2003, turning it from a fish camp restaurant into CAAC’s pantry, warehouse and offices.

We have always believed in the efforts of Clover Area Assistance Center, but were so impressed with the full-choice concept and the benefits behind it, that we wanted to be a part of its development.

Last spring, Lake Wylie and Clover prepared grant requests to the Rotary Foundation for initial funding to support the full choice pantry renovations. Each club received a grant from the Rotary Foundation totaling $6,000.

A requirement of the foundation grant is that the two local clubs have to raise matching funds and involve the participation of every Rotarian. Not only will Clover and Lake Wylie Rotarians raise the funds, but they will also supply the manpower necessary to install refrigeration units, add more shelving and construct two private intake offices.

The total cost of the full-choice pantry renovation project is $25,000. Our goal is to raise the matching $6,000 plus the remaining $10,000 needed to complete the last two phases of renovations. And $3,000 has already been donated by an anonymous local business toward the refrigeration units.

Coins for CAAC is a coin collection drive that will take the support of individuals, families, churches and businesses throughout our community in order to succeed. Thanks to the marketing and graphic skills of a Lake Wylie Rotarian, we have designed easily identifiable blue and gold cans that can be picked-up at CAAC or any participating site.

Simply take the collection can home, fill it with coins and return it to a participating site anytime between now and Oct. 26. Many teachers throughout the school district will also have a collection can in their classroom so that donations can be made at the schools.

The following locations have been designated as official collection can pick-up and drop-off sites: CAAC, Sifford-Stine Insurance, Bordeaux & Bordeaux CPA, Family Trust Credit Union and both the Lake Wylie and Clover offices of Clover Community Bank and Rinehart Realty.

You can also look for our blue and gold table at several upcoming community events. We will celebrate the closing of Coins for CAAC at the Clover Rotary Mummy Shuffle on Oct. 26.

Please show your support of our fundraising efforts and help us to help CAAC serve those in need in our community.
