YORK — A McConnells man is accused of contacting a 12-year-old girl on Facebook and offering her money for sex.
Benjamin Thrift, 21, was charged Wednesday with criminal sexual conduct with a minor or attempt, second degree. He is jailed on an $800,000 bond at the Moss Justice Center.
A teacher at York Preparatory Academy was giving a lesson on proper internet behavior when student revealed she received an "inappropriate" message on Facebook, according to a Rock Hill Police report.
The girl said Thrift contacted her through the social media website on Oct. 6. He offered her money "to do anything he wanted to her for an hour," the report states. When Thrift revealed his age, the child told him he was too old for her, police say.
The student's mother gave police permission to search her phone and Facebook account. After an investigation, Thrift was arrested.
