YORK — The Miss York County scholarship pageant and Miss Teen York County pageant will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Sylvia Theater in downtown York.
The pageant, which is still accepting applications from contestants, is open to women ages 17 to 23 for Miss York County and ages 13 to 17 for Miss Teen. It is a preliminary event for the Miss South Carolina and Miss America pageants.
Karen Fritz, director of the local pageant, said organizers opened up participation to contestants across the state to ensure the pageant has enough participation.
“Once we are able to establish ourselves, we will be open to York County residents only,” she said. Contestants would be required to live, work or attend school in York County.
Fritz said the Miss York County winner will receive a $750 scholarship sponsored by Agape Assisted Living. The first runner-up will receive a $250 scholarship, she said, and the teens will receive savings bonds.
Earlier this week, 11 contestants were expected to participate.
During the pageant, the reigning Miss York Leslie Knight and Miss York Teen Vanna Sams will crown successors. Fritz said the pageant was called the Miss York pageant for the past two years, but was open to contestants across the county.
This year will mark the third pageant since the last Miss York was crowned in 1977. In 2011, a group of York residents organized a committee to bring back the pageant, and in 2012 Alyssa Puckett was crowned the first Miss York in 35 years.
Knight was crowned last year. She placed in the top 15 in the 2013 Miss South Carolina Pageant, where she was awarded the Miss America Community Service Scholarship and the title Miss Photogenic.
