Mick Zais, state superintendent of education, will visit four York County schools on Monday, continuing his tours of schools around the state.
Zais has visited 227 South Carolina schools since taking office in January 2011.
On Monday, he will visit Hunter Street Elementary School and York Comprehensive High School in the York school district and Oakridge Middle School and Crowders Creek Elementary School in Clover school district.
Dr. Zais just likes to get out and get a feeling for things on the ground, said George Brown, a public information specialist with the S.C. Department of Education. Its difficult to run an organization from behind a desk at Columbia.
At his visits, Zais will meet with school leaders, tour the schools and hear about challenges and successes at the individual schools. Zais also will take some time to discuss recently released state report cards, Brown said.
We just try to get out there and let the interested parties know what the data shows, Brown said.
Hunter Street Elementary principal Kevin Hood said hes excited about Zaiss visit.
Its basically going to be a dialogue and a tour of the school and a visit to some classes, Hood said.
Schools have flexibility to decide how Zais will spend some of his time, Brown said. In a set of instructions sent to the schools, it was stated that Zais does not expect any special performances and that hed prefer students remain in their classrooms.
