River Hills church offering special service

River Hills Community Church will hold “A Quiet Christmas” service at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. This service acknowledges Christmas is not always a happy time; it can be a time when grief, loss and sorrow overshadow the joyful celebration.

Senior pastor Gayle Montgomery began holding services for those experiencing grief and loss in 2004, when her sister’s 42-year-old husband died unexpectedly. As the holidays approached, her sister commented that she just wanted to “go to sleep before Thanksgiving and wake up after New Year’s.” This sentiment prompted the decision to design a service that would allow those experiencing grief to acknowledge their feelings, honor their loved ones, and re-frame Christmas in such a way that the true meaning can still be celebrated, even if all the “hoopla” surrounding Christmas is not.

Using Scripture, reflections and music, explore the comfort God offers in dark times and remember those we love. Child care is provided by reservation only. Call 803-831-1615.
