CLOVER — The Clover-area Pop Warner Junior Pee Wee cheerleaders placed ninth in their division in a national championship Dec. 6-14 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex.
The event was held at the Walt Disney World Resort, with over 300 teams from across the United States competing for national honors.
“Not only was the trip of historical value to the small town of Clover, our Pee Wee cheerleaders were the first South Carolina team to advance to the nationals,” said Pee Wee team mom Aubrey Caldwell.
The Clover Pop Warner cheer team placed second in the Nov. 29 Mid-South Regional Championships in Raleigh, N.C., advancing to the national competition.
There were 65 Pee Wee cheer squads representing seven states in the Mid-South Regional event.
While the local cheerleaders have experienced success in regional and national competition, Caldwell said expenses drained the Clover Area Pop Warner account.
“We are praying for sponsors to help replenish those funds, so we can purchase equipment and uniforms for the 2014 season,” she said.
The Clover Pop Warner program will begin early registration in April 2014.
“Our practice season begins in July,” Caldwell said. “We thank God for leading us on this amazing journey and hope to do it again next year with a goal of placing in the top five.”
Local Pop Warner organizers said their sponsors include the Clover Jaycees, Bi-Lo, Sports Authority, Pizza Man and Clover Gun Shop.
Clover Area Pop Warner was founded in 2010 as a nonprofit organization designed to encourage athletic participation while emphasizing scholastic excellence.
CAPW serves young scholar athletes of York County, providing competitive and fun football and cheer programs that never turn a child away for an inability to pay.
The squad of 21 student-athletes includes ages 8 to 12 and represents the first team Clover has sent to the national championships.
CAPW is an affiliate of the Greater Gaston Pop Warner.
