YORK — S.C. 5 reopened around 10 a.m. Thursday after an "extremely large tree" fell onto the road, creating a blockade across both lanes for several hours.
A Rock Hill man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after his car ran into the tree, officials say.
Crews were dispatched to the area of S.C. 5, two miles east of York's city limits between South Shiloh and Gordon Roads, after the tree fell onto the highway, said Lance Cpl. Billy Elder with the Highway Patrol.
Authorities redirected traffic until the tree was removed from the road.
After the tree fell, Michael Kyle Bumgardner's Chevrolet pickup collided with the tree while traveling in the westbound lane, Elder said. Bumgardner, 25, was taken to Piedmont Medical Center with minor injuries.
By late morning, he had been released from the hospital.
