Clover, York wrestlers compete in York’s 4-team match

January 22, 2014

— The York Comprehensive High School wrestling team hosted a four-team event Jan. 16 that included Clover, Fort Mill and Nation Ford.

Each team competed in two matches, with Fort Mill finishing 2-0, York and Nation Ford each 1-1 and Clover 0-2.

“We have a young team that is getting better each week,” said CHS head coach Mike Fitzgerald.

Clover’s Zach Conrad is the No. 1 wrestler in the state in the 220-pound weight class, according to the rankings.

Clover freshman Austin Oldenburg won his match by outscoring his opponent in overtime.

“A lot of hard work goes into winning a match, especially a close match in overtime,” said Oldenburg.

York’s Ethan Whitesides, a junior who competes in the heavyweight classification, pinned his opponent early in the match. “You’ve got to want it and take advantage of the opportunity when it’s there,” he said.

Whitesides said he owes his success to Beau Nunn, one of the top grapplers in the state before graduating last year. “He taught me how to wrestle and really helped me develop,” said Whitesides.

The Cougars were scheduled to host Clover Wednesday and will travel to Lancaster Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
