Report: Clover man steals beer, then hits 18-wheeler on icy road

— A Clover man who was charged with shoplifting for stealing two packs of beer Wednesday morning hit an 18-wheeler after fleeing from the convenience store where the theft took place, according to a report from the York County Sheriff's Office.

Jeremy Ryan Smith, 19, 116 Appaloosa Drive, Clover, was charged with shoplifting an 18-pack and a 24 pack of Bud Light beer, according to reports.

A clerk at the Hot Spot convenience store, 1915 N. U.S. 321, Clover, told deputies a male suspect had stolen the beer, then got into a car and pulled onto the ice-covered highway.

After pulling onto U.S. 321, the suspect hit an 18-wheeler, then got out of the car and fled on foot, according to a report.

Sheriff's deputies found Smith nearby, according to a report. He admitted to the shoplifting and to driving a 2005 Toyota that was involved in the accident, according to a report.

Smith, who was cited by the S.C. Highway Patrol for his involvement in the accident, was taken to the York County Detention Center.
