— Longtime Clover football loyalist Jimmy Bryant, a 35-year member of the chain crew on Friday nights, has announced the formation of a Clover School District Athletic Hall of Fame.

Bryant said the Hall of Fame was organized to honor those who have made lasting contributions to athletics in the Clover School District through outstanding achievement or service.

“Hall of Fame inductees will include former Clover and Roosevelt high school athletic participants in all sports,” said Bryant.

The former CHS football and baseball participant said he had been pondering the idea for some time. “I shared the thought with CHS head football coach Chad Smith and he liked the idea,” said Bryant.

He talked to school board Mack McCarter, who gave the proposal the green light. “I talked to several others who formed the hall of fame selection committee,” Bryant said.

CHS athletic director Carroll Hester lauded Bryant and others for their efforts in bringing about an athletic hall of fame. “It’s been a long time coming,” Hester said.

“We should have had a hall of fame in the school district in past years,” Hester said. “There are so many outstanding athletes who played at Clover and Roosevelt high schools.”

He added: “We’re excited about the formation of a hall of fame for all sports. We are sure there will be good response from the community.”

The following criteria will apply to the three nominating categories:

• Athlete: Any Clover School District athlete whose primary achievement occurred during high school. The nominee will not be considered until 15 years after his or her high school graduation.

• Coach: Must have coached a sanctioned sport in the Clover School District for at least five years. A coach is eligible for hall of fame induction if he or she has retired from coaching, reached the age of 60 or is deceased.

• Contributor: Those who have made contributions to Clover School District athletics in some capacity other than athlete or coach. This includes broadcasters, tournament officials, community leaders, athletic administrators or others.

Nomination forms are available through the Clover School District and Clover Touchdown Club web sites as well as the front office at Clover High School.

Nomination forms must be submitted by April 1 for consideration for induction in September 2014. The forms will be presented to a selection committee that will choose inductees.

Qualifying nominees who are not selected will be held for future consideration. Nomination forms should be sent to: Clover School District Athletic Hall of Fame, Carroll Hester, Clover High School, 1625 S.C. 55 East, Clover, SC 29710.
