YORK — The York Comprehensive High School wrestling team is sending eight grapplers to individual Upper State competition this weekend.
The Upper State tournament will be Friday and Saturday at Laurens High School; the top five qualifiers in region tournaments will compete for Upstate honors.
Region title winner Cole Rumfelt, a premier wrestler in the Upper State, is expected to make his presence felt in the 138-poind weight class. Rumfelt defeated Nation Ford’s Michael Allen in the Region 3-AAAA tournament.
Cougar head wrestling coach Todd Hershberger commended Rumfelt and the seven other YCHS Upper State qualifiers for elevating their performance level in the region tournament.
“Cole kept our streak going for having a region champion four years in a row,” said Hershberger, who lauded the wrestling team for continued success on the mat.
The Cougar grapplers have made the playoffs six years in a row and finished in the top-10 in 4A classification the last four tears. The YCHS team was ranked in the top-20 for much of this season.
Ethan Whitesides qualified for the Upstate with a second-place finish in the heavyweight category. York had two third-place finishers, Michael Avore at 106 pounds and Chance Kelly at 220.
Three fourth-place finishers include Sam Ferguson at 170, Thomas Wilkerson at 182 and Evan Danehower at 195. James Good qualified with a fifth-place finish at 160.
