CLOVER — Seven members of the Clover High School wrestling team have qualified for Upper State competition this weekend at Laurens High School.
Clover coach Mike Fitzgerald lauded the Blue Eagle qualifiers for advancing to the match, where the top five qualifiers in region tournaments compete for Upstate honors.
“We’re excited to have seven kids compete in Upper State competition,” said Fitzgerald. “Our wrestlers worked hard in the summer and winter. This is what we prepare for.”
Fitzgerald said the Blue Eagles are a young team this year, with one senior, two juniors and four freshmen and sophomores.
Zach Conrad placed second in the region tournament, and he carries impressive credentials to the Upstate event. Conrad, who has been invited to compete in national competition this spring, has been ranked No. 1 in the state at 220 pounds.
“Zach is a role model who’s helped our young wrestlers all season,” said Fitzgerald. “He’s beaten all of the competition in his weight class. We are gearing him up to win a state championship.”
Clover’s Harrison Priode qualified with a second place finish at 145 pounds. Jharee Kems and Joe Bryant advanced with third place finishes, Kems at 132 pounds and Bryant at 160. Advancing with fourth place finishes were Karson McCarter at 113 pounds and Jack McGivem at 285.
