YORK — Steve Martin has long enjoyed preparing smoked meats and making meals for his church. Now, York diners can enjoy his culinary talents.
Martin and his wife, Joyce, who live in Chester, recently opened the Super Subs shop in the Yorkville Plaza on S.C. 161. The shop offers subs, salads, burgers and some of Martin’s specialties.
Super Subs, located in the same storefront where another sub shop by the same name but under different ownership closed last fall, offers hot and cold deli subs, grilled sandwiches, salads, soups and sides.
Martin’s signature dishes include a milk-based chicken stew, a barbecue pork sandwich with chips, made with Martin’s homemade barbecue, and homemade chili with beans.
The chicken stew has been one of the most popular items since the eatery opened in late December, especially in the recent cold snap, Martin said.
“A lot of people make a tomato-based chicken stew,” he said. “This is a milk-based stew, with potatoes and onions. It’s really good.”
The Martins also added burgers to the menu because, they realized, not everyone wants a sub, soup or salad. The burger menu includes hamburgers, cheeseburgers, a bacon cheeseburger and a barbecue bacon burger.
Holly Starnes, manager of the eatery, said the super Italian sub has been another popular menu item, as is the banana pudding.
Subs are made to order with fresh sliced meats, cheeses and toppings. Sides include a soup of the day, pasta, potato salad, coleslaw, pineapple coleslaw and chips.
Salads include a grilled chicken salad, chef salad, chicken and tuna salads or a combo or the two, and a cold plate that includes both tuna and chicken salad, pasta salad and coleslaw.
Martin said the shop will offer delivery for orders of $35 or more within a 5-mile area.
