Lightning strikes house in Rock Hill

Lightning struck this house at 2984 Harlinsdale Drive, off India Hook Road in Rock Hill.

Lightning hit a house in Rock Hill and power lines were downed in Clover after a band of heavy rainfall and powerful winds stormed through York County Friday morning, part of a weather system that prompted meteorologists to place the county, Chester and Lancaster under a severe thunderstorm watch lasting until the afternoon.

The National Weather Service warned residents of the impending storm early Friday morning, explaining that a cold front was moving into the area, bringing with it heavy rainfall and strong winds that they estimated would reach up to at least 40 mph.

The storm fell on the area hard, knocking down power lines in Clover and leaving 130 York Electric Cooperative customers without power, said Marc Howie, York Co-Op spokesman.

In Rock Hill, fire crews responded to a fire at a Harlinsdale Drive, off India Hook Road, after a bolt of lightning hit a house and sparked a small blaze, said Rock Hill Fire Battalion Chief Rusty Myers.

No one was injured and the fire, which erupted in the attic, was extinguished within minutes, he said.

Cotton Howell, director of York County's emergency management office, said emergency officials had not received any reports of widespread damage, though downed lines and isolated power outages are common with Friday's kind of storms.

The primary concern, he said, is that the rain fell down so quickly that storm drainage systems might not be able to keep up, leaving runoff on the roads.

Much of the Upstate and parts of the Midlands are included in the watch radius, along with one county in northeastern Georgia and several counties in western North Carolina.
