— With regular-season play drawing near, Clover High School varsity and JV baseball teams will compete in preseason tournaments.

“We are looking forward to the preseason tournaments for both squads,” said coach Darrell VanDyke.

The Blue Eagle varsity team plays in the Chester Preseason tournament, squaring off against rival York at 5 p.m. Friday at Chester. Clover will play the second game of a double-header at 7 p.m. against Gaffney at the same location.

The Blue Eagles will be the host for Tuesday’s double-header beginning with Clover against Blacksburg at 5 p.m. In the second game, it’ll be York against Gaffney at 7 p.m.

The Friday, Monday and Tuesday pairings are pool games, which will be played in five innings instead of the customary seven.

Next week’s seven-inning bracket games will be held Thursday and Friday, with the championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chester. Other games Saturday will determine final tournament placements.

The Clover JV Preseason tournament will be held in Blue Eagle Country and begins with Gaffney pitted against Clover at 5 p.m. Monday

Clover will battle East Gaston in the second game of Monday’s double-header at 7 p.m.

A Wednesday double-header will have Blacksburg against York at 5 p.m., with the York JV team facing Chester at 7 p.m.

East Gaston will play Gaffney at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 6, and Blacksburg against Chester at 7 p.m.

Friday is a rain date. Saturday will showcase the No. 1 pools in a 2 p.m. championship game.

All games are five innings, except for Saturday’s

VanDyke has been pleased with off season and preseason preparations.

“We have been progressing quite well on the varsity and JV,” he said. “The snow slowed us down a little, but our kids have been working really hard when we’ve had an opportunity to be on the field. At this time of the season, you expect the hitters to be behind the pitching, so that is no surprise.”

Added VanDyke, “Our defense has improved tremendously. Hopefully that will be a part of our game to continue to improve.”

The Blue Eagles open regular season play at 6 p.m. March 10 on the road against East Gaston. The CHS team travels to Fort Mill March 11 for a 7 p.m. Region 3-AAAA game.

The first home game is 7 p.m. March 14 against South Pointe.
