Playing surfaces a priority at YCHS

— York Comprehensive High School athletic director Steve Boyd says field maintenance is a top priority as the spring sports season draws near.

“Our baseball and softball fields require year-round maintenance,” Boyd said. “We were treating the fields back in October. This includes applying sand, dirt and Turface topping.”

YCHS has top athletic facilities since the new high school opened three years ago. But Boyd said much time has been devoted to improving the drainage systems at both fields.

“We’ve made a lot of progress,” he said.

Boyd said spring sports means heavy participation at YCHS.

“We’ll have as many as 250 participants and 12 teams this season. It’s great to see so many kids competing in the various spring sports.”

He said scheduling can be a problem.

“Scheduling can be a nightmare when events are rained out,” he said. “There are times when we have as many as eight or nine events in one day, home and away.”

Boyd said the athletic department does the best it can to catch up when there are rain delays. He said every effort is made to reschedule an event and sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

“There have been times when a late-season event that did not have playoff implications was not made up,” said Boyd.
