— A York man on a mo-ped led police on a chase through western York County Saturday afternoon before ditching his vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to a York County Sheriff's Office report.

The mo-ped driver failed to yield right of way to a marked patrol while he was pulling out of the Knights Inn parking lot in York. The man was driving erratically, going left of the center line multiple times, so the deputy activated his lights and siren, the report states.

The driver cut through a restaurant parking lot at the intersection of U.S. 321 and Sharon Road, and continued toward Sharon.

He turned onto a residential road, drove behind a house and then fled on foot. Deputies found the mo-ped on its side with the keys still in the ignition.

Inside the mo-ped was a bill with the driver's name and address on it, as well as a South Carolina Equivalency Diploma bearing the same name.

When deputies later went to the man's home, he tried to run out the back door but another officer was waiting there for him, the report states.

Frankie Shane Pickrell, 36, was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and reckless driving. He is being held at the York County Detention Center on a $3,945 bond.

Deputies asked why he didn't stop, and Pickrell replied he had been drinking and "did not want to go back to jail," according to the report.
