Scholar athletes recognized at YCHS

South Carolina High School League scholar athletes were recognized during the May 19 York Comprehensive High School spring sports awards ceremony in the school auditorium.

Scholar athlete recipients included the following:

Heba Abdin, Lawrence Adams, Brooke Andrews, Oscar Angeles, Mattie Ballard, Hannah Barnwell, Thomas Broom, Scottee Burns, Hannah Cassell, Markell Castle, Nora Childers, Julie Comer, Terry Doan, Ian Elliott, Raymond Ellis, Elias Ennis and Adrianna Ferguson.

Also, Erick Gonzalez, Caroline Guerry, Danny Hevelow, Morgan Kuczler, Katie Logue, Ashley McCarter, Sammie McClurkin, Hamilton McGarity, Ryan Moore, Jerome Pettiway, Kimball Prosser, Mallory Prosser, Brooke Ramsey, Matt Ransom, Karla Sanchez, Will Smarr, Daniel Smith and Ashley Terry.

Mose Holsclaw/Gray Dickson Memorial Scholarship Awards were presented to Nora Childers, Heba Abdin, Mattie Ballard, Kate Harper, Ashley McCarter and Matt Ransom.

Three outgoing coaches were recognized for their contributions to the athletic department.

YCHS athletic director Steve Boyd presented plaques to head baseball coach Scot Kiggans, assistant baseball coach Stas Swerdzewski and JV girls’ softball coach Lynn Leake.

Clover’s Stafford named coach of year

Clover High School boys’ soccer coach Graham Stafford has been named coach of the year for Region 3-AAAA.

Stafford guided the Blue Eagles to a successful season in a tough region.

In addition, Blue Eagle standout Fernando Alpizar-Ramos has been named to the all-region team.

3 Lady Blue Eagles named to all-region soccer

Three Clover High School girls’ soccer standouts have been named to the All-Region 3-AAAA team.

Lady Blue Eagle mainstays Claire Allen, Cori Erwin and Alex Pletiniewski have been recognized as all-region.

2 YCHS standouts named to all-region soccer

Two York Comprehensive High School soccer standouts have been named all-region.

Mahoganny Setzer, a key contributor to the Lady Cougar soccer team all season, has been named to the all-region team.

Buddy Anderson, a placekicker for the Cougar football team, has been named to the boys’ all-region soccer team.

Clover girls basketball camp to be July 14

The first Clover High School all girls basketball camp will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. July 14 to 17.

The camp director is Shakkia Walker, assistant girls’ basketball coach at CHS. Providing instruction will be the Lady Blue Eagle coaching staff, players and former players.

Pre-registration is recommended, with final registration to be at 4:30 p.m. July 14. Multi-child discount is $10 per child.

Camp day activities will focus on the fundamentals of the game, including dribbling, footwork, shooting, defense and ball-handling.

Blue Eagles basketball camp nearing

The Clover High School Blue Eagles basketball camp will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 9 to 12.

The camp, for youths in kindergarten through sixth grade, will be at Clover High School at a cost of $55 per participant. The cost includes 10 hours of instruction, T-shirt and prizes.

Final registration is set for 8:30 a.m. Monday.

YCHS boys’, girls’ basketball to host June camp

For the first time, the boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball coaches will team up to host the 15th annual summer basketball camp.

The camp been hosted exclusively by the girls’ coaches in the past. It will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. June 23 to 26 at the YCHS gyms. Ages 5-15 are welcome to attend.

The Cougar and Lady Cougar coaching staffs and varsity players will provide instruction.

Multi-child discount is $10 per child and there is a $10 discount for York school district employees’ children. Only one discount can be used.

Camp day activities will focus on the fundamentals of the game, including dribbling, footwork, shooting, defense and ball-handling. Campers can pick up a form at York Recreation Center or at any of the schools or register on June 23. Campers will receive a free T-shirt.
