York Optimists honor students

— The York Optimist Club held its annual ceremony May 22 to honor youths named as Student of the Month during the past school year.

Those honored as Optimist Student of the Month for 2013-14 are: October, Chris Moss, York One Academy; November, Trevor Tallent, Cotton Belt Elementary; December, Emma Velasco, York Middle; January, Tyrone Mackey, Hickory Grove/Sharon Elementary; February, Angelica Ruby Velasco, Jefferson Elementary; March, Susan Elisabeth Carver, Hunter Street Elementary, and Robert Reavis, Harold C. Johnson Elementary; April, Kathryn Pike, York Intermediate; and May, Heba Abdin, York Comprehensive High, and Ashley McCarter, Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center.

Each student was recognized during a luncheon at the technology center and presented with a gift card from the club.

Ashley McCarter and Shawna Hughes were honored as the winners of the York Optimist Club essay contest.

In addition, three York school district resource officers were recognized. They are, Michael Hawkins, York Middle School; Brian Kimble, York One Academy; and Dave Prescott, York Comprehensive High.

Dennis Wells, president of the York Optimists, welcomed the attendees and York Superintendent Vernon Prosser, and Stancy Bankhead recognized the honorees.
