Republican women award $5K scholarship

From staff reportsJune 3, 2014

— Clover High School graduate Mary Elizabeth Trainer of Clover was awarded a $5,000 college scholarship May 29 from the Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club.

The club’s Fay Bergman scholarship is funded by proceeds from the club’s annual home and garden tour, and each year – on the basis of need and merit – the scholarship is awarded to one or more Clover High seniors, male or female.

Trainer, a National Honor Society student, graduated with a 4.5 GPA and a class ranking of 51 out of 472, while working part time in addition to her involvement in school clubs.

She has held leadership positions as student council class vice president and class secretary and as a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team. She has served as student cheer coach, JV cheerleading captain and varsity cheerleader. In her junior and senior years, she participated in HOSA, a national student organization for future health professionals.

Her volunteer service has included roles as a church small group leader and work as a student volunteer at the Carolina Spine/Pain Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte. Four years ago she served on a mission team to Kenya, sparking her passion to provide medical attention to impoverished children in Third World countries.

“My goal and ambition is to become a pediatric nurse. This is not just a career choice, but also something I feel as a calling,” Trainer said.

Trainer plans to attend North Greenville University to study biology and nursing, and take physician assistant coursework.
