Deputies: Hunting rifles found in Smyrna woods

adouglas@heraldonline.comJuly 4, 2014

York County deputies say they found four guns in a wooded area in Smyrna earlier this week after state transportation workers reported suspicious activity.

On Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff's office responded to McKnight Road near S.C. Hwy. 97 where South Carolina Department of Transportation workers said they say a woman and a man throw out firearm cases. The woman and man threw the guns and drove away in a gold Chevrolet Corsica, according to a York County Sheriff's Office report.

The report indicates that the guns are hunting rifles.

Authorities uncovered the weapons in the woods and ran the serial numbers. The guns had not been reported stolen, the sheriff's office report states.

Deputies say they couldn't find the couple who discarded the guns.
