— York Comprehensive High School head football coach Bobby Carroll and the York Touchdown Club are seeking to expand Cougar football’s support base.

Both Carroll and Tim Hartsoe, president of the club, made a plea this week to touchdown club supporters to renew their memberships. They also asked prospective members to jump on board the Cougar football express.

“I want to encourage each of you to join,” Carroll said in a letter to the team’s support base.

“Money is and always will be an issue in high school sports,” Carroll said. “The monies we generate in football help each of the sports at YCHS. We deem those sports as important as football.”

Carroll said Cougar football is involved with a federally sponsored summer meal program that feeds more than 400 students each day, a third of whom are football players.

“That is huge, in the nutrition end of the program,” he said. “Our players have been working hard preparing for a championship run.”

Carroll said a donation or touchdown club membership provides a York football player the best equipment possible.

He said athletic director “has been wonderful in giving us what we need.”

Membership to the York Touchdown Club is $100.

“The bottom line in all of this is ‘It’s for the kids,’” said Carroll. “It amounts to less than 30 cents a day. Please join the York Touchdown Club and be a part of greatness.”

Hartsoe emphasized the touchdown club’s impact on the Cougar football program through supplemental funding.

“Because of our memberships and fundraising efforts, we have been able to provide helmets, shoulder pads, pants, gloves, video equipment, and trips to the bowling alley and movie theaters,” said Hartsoe.

“One of our most rewarding activities is feeding the varsity team and coaches each Thursday after practice,” he said. “We will continue this, beginning the week of the York-Sumter football game.

“In order to do these things, we need the support of fans, parents, teachers and anyone who loves York football.”

Hartsoe said the touchdown club plans to purchase headsets for the coaches this year to replace 10-year-old equipment.
