No charges against cop in Charleston teen's death

The Associated PressJuly 14, 2014

— A prosecutor has decided not to file charges against a police officer in the death of a 19-year-old man at a Charleston apartment, saying the evidence is clear the teen shot himself.

Solicitor Scarlett Wilson issued her findings Monday. Hours later, Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen talked about Denzel Curnell's death.

Mullen says the Charleston officer was off duty handling security at the apartments last month when he saw Curnell wearing a hooded sweatshirt and acting suspiciously on an 85-degree night.

The officer says Curnell refused to take his hand from his pocket, even after being wrestled to the ground and eventually pulled out a gun and shot himself. The officer didn't fire.

An attorney for Curnell's family says there was no need for the officer to bother the teen.
