Pastors sought for 'Released' meeting

Enquirer Herald

Release Time Bible Education is becoming a reality for York District One. All pastors who serve in the footprint of the district are invited to view the curriculum and experience a sample lesson at 6 p.m. Monday, July 21 at First Presbyterian Church of York.

Much progress has been made over the past 18 months in preparing RTBE to start this year. Some of the first members of the Steering Committee met with the Western York County Christian Ministerial Association in May 2007, receiving their hearty endorsement. Since that time, the Steering Committee has grown both in numbers and in variety of denominational representation. The Steering Committee presented the concept both to Superintendent Russell Booker and to the York School Board. The Release Time Bible Education concept, which has long been in place in the Clover School District and in other districts around the state, was approved by the board in December 2007. Since that time, representatives of many local churches have volunteered their time, money, and effort, serving on committees and developing support from the churches, individuals, local businesses and the community. Clover's RTBE budget is $100,000 annually. It is expected that the York budget would need to be a similar figure.

A Board of Directors for RTBE is now in place and is diligently working on final details. At its last meeting, the RTBE Board approved a curriculum based on the Gospel of John for the first year. The lessons are designed for an elective release time of 45 minutes each week. Each Bible lesson will be about 20 minutes in length. Students entering grades 6 and 7 at Harold C. Johnson and students at York One Academy will be eligible for participation in the program for the 2008-2009 school year.

Permission slips were sent home with eligible students in May, and another opportunity for parents to register their children will be available at the beginning of the school year.

All pastors in the district are encouraged to come to Monday's presentation to receive further information, ask questions, and become part of the RTBE team for York.
